Village Issues

A Balanced Budget

North Barrington has historically been diligent about maintaining a balanced annual budget. Reducing unnecessary costs and thoughtfully examining all expenditures have contributed to a wise community spending plan over the years. The Village must continue to meet necessary public service needs while containing costs for taxpayers.

Low Village Taxes

Property taxes in Illinois are too high and are driving people out of our community. Take a closer look at your tax bill and you will see that School District spending makes up almost two-thirds of your property taxes. In contrast, your village government operates on roughly 3.5% of your total collected taxes. The average city in Lake County collects about 9%.

Focused Planning

Our community leaders, who make up our commissions, committees, and village council, examine and plan for new environmental initiatives, zoning recommendations, and possible commercial endeavors. Examining options for an improved community must be at the forefront of leadership.

Transparency

North Barrington government must be open to all residents. Community members can always attend meetings, examine documents, explore budget priorities and generate feedback for our elected officials. As neighbors, we must all work in an open and fair manner.

Less Spending

The Village Board has always worked to restrain spending and reduce unnecessary costs in order to respect taxpayers.

Our Village President and Trustees continue to monitor and examine expenditures to contain the size and scope of government spending.

Protecting Nature

One of the founding principles of our community was to take care of our natural open spaces and environmental beauty. The Village must continue to protect North Barrington’s countless heritage oak trees and the wildlife habitats found at Grassy and Honey Lake. The character of our community is found in our surroundings.

Capital Projects

North Barrington has a Capital Improvements Plan to inventory, examine and begin the process of replacing failing culverts, pipes and drain tiles. This multi-year project must come to fruition to help lessen flooding risks, enhance property values, and ease drainage difficulties across the village.

Neighborhood Safety

North Barrington contracts with our Lake County Sheriff’s Department for a deputy to patrol our neighborhood streets. In coordination with Lake Barrington, our village has maintained an intergovernmental agreement which affords us this cost-effective police protection program.

Our Property Values

The Village Board has been active in protecting property owners from intrusive and disruptive commercial activity on private lands. Maintaining community standards that honor private property rights, while protecting surrounding home values, is an important balance that should be upheld by our local government leaders.
